Abstract

Operation Sophia was launched in 2015 with the main goalof eradicating migrant smuggling and human trafficking from Libya. The decision of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in Hirsi Jamaa and Others v. Italyrequired the migrants given aid at sea to disembark in Italy. The lack of progresson the missionas a consequence of due respect for international law, in addition to Italian attitudestowardsthe influx of migrants, resulted in the end of the mission’s maritime operation as it was initially conceived.
